Unlike many other festivals in South Africa, the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival really lives up to its billing as a true arts festival that encompasses different genres and reaches into every corner of the city’s seven regions. Women of the Sun Film Festival – from 2 – 5 September at the Bioscope at Main Street Life. The Women of the Sun Film Festival celebrates women filmmakers from Africa and the Diaspora. The main screenings will be at The Bioscope from the 3rd- 9th September. Outdoor screenings will also take place at Mfulo Park in Soweto and Parkview. The event will open with a glamourous red carpet launch evening at Arts on Main on 2 September www.wos.org.za
David Krut Print Project Workshop at Arts on Main – Every Thursday during August and September from 2 to 8 pm. Artists Maja Maljevic and Richard Penn will be creating monotypes during this period and members of the public are welcome to view the work in progress. Ranjith Kally Retrospective at the Bailey Seippel Gallery at Arts on Main runs from 22 August to 31 October. Opening 22 August, 12 – 2 pm. This exhibition showcases iconic images from the career of Drum photographer, Ranjith Kally during the 50’s and 60’s – ranging from photos of child labour in the Natal canefields to images from the jazz, dance and social scene.
