Joburg has an excellent network of private and state hospitals and clinics. It is wise for you to ensure that you have medical insurance as most private health facilities will ask for cash or credit card payments.

  • Food Safety: The quality of food in Joburg is excellent and the city boasts some of the top restaurants in the world. Food safety regulations are strictly enforced in the City.
  • Influenza: The peak influenza season in South Africa is during winter (May to August). You may consider having a flu vaccine before visiting SA, especially if you have a chronic condition.
  • HIV/AIDS: Practice safe sex. Sex with anyone under the age of 18 is a criminal offence.
  • Malaria: Joburg is not a malaria area. Vaccination against malaria for visitors to all private game reserves and the provinces Mpumulanga, Limpopo including the Kruger National Park and parts of KwaZulu Natal can be obtained at hospitals and clinics throughout the city.
  • Smoking: It is illegal to smoke in any public indoor enclosed or partially closed area, or on public transport.
