Boekehuis has been open for four-and-a-half years and has established itself as the city's only "intellectual bookshop", specializing in South African and world literature, with an emphasis on Afrikaans authors. Described by manager Corina van der Spoel as "one of the hidden gems of Joburg", Boekehuis holds regular launches, readings and discussions, and has created a "cultural community" between RAU and Wits universities. It stocks books with a spread of interests: anthropology, natural sciences, travel and philosophy, in addition to literature.
