A performance with a shopping trolley, an exhibition on evictions from a block of flats: The projects selected for GoetheonMain could not have been more diverse. Nevertheless, the artists who exhibit in the new venue of the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg have a common goal: to mediate at the interface between city and suburbs.
Until now the cultural segregation in Johannesburg still influences both artists and the public alike. A large part of the white minority avoids the trip to downtown. Likewise, very few blacks attend art events in the wealthy suburbs. The Goethe Institute wants to extend the cultural dialogue by adding to its headquarters in Jan Smuts Avenue a central space in the middle of town: GoetheonMain. It is a space which aims to encourage exchange between artists and spectators of various origins.
