Apartheid Museum
The Apartheid Museum tells a story
of the triumph of the human of the
human spirit over adversity and
oppression. The museum has been
conceptualized by a multi-disciplinary
team of curators, film-makers, historians
and designers.

Kliptown
In the heart of Soweto in 1955,
Kliptown was the scene of the adoption
of the Freedom Charter by the Congress
of the People.

Regina Mundi Church
Regina Mundi is the largest Catholic
Church in Soweto, the most populous
black urban residential area in
the country, when protesting students
were fired at by the police on their
way to Orlando stadium on 16 June1976,
and Hector and many others were
killed, the students fled for sanctuary
to Regina Mundi.The church had since
then quietly offered its protection
to those struggling for liberation.

Hector Pieterson Memorial
Museum
The museum is intrinsically linked
to the origins of the Soweto Uprisings
and its aftermath. By 10:30am on
16 June 1976, thousands of students
had gathered in Orlando West around
Vilakazi Street and the precinct
where the Hector Pieterson Museum
is presently located to begin a
protest march against the imposition
of the Afrikaans language as the
medium of instruction in Soweto’s
schools.

Khayalendaba
The African mystic, Credo Mutwa,
has built healing and cultural villages
to offer insights into traditional
African ways, the first of which
was Khayalendaba (Home of Storytelling)
just below the Oppenheimer tower
in west central Jabavu.It contains
grotesque representation of African
deities and spirits.

Vilakazi Street
Vilakazi Street is the most famous
street in Soweto and it the only
street in the world to have had
two noble prize winners as its residents.
Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu
lived and live in Vilakazi Street.
Nelson Mandela’s house has become
a museum and the Tutu’s house is
still used as a normal home by the
Tutu family.
