The Soweto Hotel on Freedom Square… the jewel of Soweto
Nestled in the heart of Kliptown is one of Soweto’s first 4-star hotels: The Soweto Hotel on Freedom Square. Catering for locals and visitors alike, the hotel offers delectable cuisine, luxurious accommodation and soulful jazz with a distinct cultural flavour, intermingled with contemporary flair. This gem instills a sense of pride and nostalgia, captured by the eclectic collection of jazz and historical memorabilia which form the backdrop of the hotel’s stylish interior décor.
“We are now in our third year of operation and are pleased to witness organic growth and development of both the hotel and the Kliptown community”, says Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, general manager of The Soweto Hotel on Freedom Square. “The community is an integral part of our existence and this is testament to the uniqueness of the South African business landscape”. The hotel sources staff as well as fruit and vegetables from the surrounding community. Local tourist guides, whose training is sponsored by Fair Trade in Tourism SA, are called upon to take guests on guided walking and bicycle tours.
The hotel is an accredited 2010 FIFA World Cup™ accommodation partner and is expected to host media and guests during this highly anticipated tournament. “We are really proud to be a part of the first African World Cup and are gearing up to deliver world-class service with special induction programmes on tourist attractions around Soweto as well as participating in the Tourism Enterprise Programme called SA Host. There is also monthly Guest Service Excellence training that is conducted on site,” says Sangweni-Siddo.
The Soweto Hotel on Freedom Square is centrally located for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. It is approximately 10 km from Soccer City Stadium, where the opening and closing 2010 FIFA World Cup™ matches will be played and is just 5km from Orlando Stadium, which will be used as a training venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and will host the FIFA World Cup™ Kick-Off Celebration Concert on 10 June 2010.
The hotel is also located at the historic national heritage site called the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication - named after the famous liberation icon: Walter Sisulu. This is the location where the Freedom Charter was signed on 26 June 1955, and is the document that was later adopted as the founding document of the South African Constitution.
“The football matches will only last 90 minutes and this gives us an opportunity to show all our guests that Soweto has a lot more to offer,” continues Sangweni-Siddo. There is a host of activities and tours to keep visitors entertained including:
