Heritage
Soak in the unique African
history and heritage in the many
museums in the city.
The many riveting stories this
city has to tell are amongst the
most profound in the world.
There are museums devoted to apartheid
and the heroes who fought against
it; to gold,
military
and Boer
history
Take a tour of human
ancestry at the
Cradle of Human Kind.
Constitution
Hill is the site
of the notorious Old
Fort Prison Complex,
where many of South Africa’s leading
political activists,
including Mahatma Gandhi,
Joe Slovo and Nelson
Mandela, were detained.
Most of the original buildings
are preserved and restored for their
heritage value and look as they
did when this was a working prison.
The
Apartheid Museum -
illustrates the rise and
fall of apartheid. It is
a beacon of hope
showing the world how South Africa
is coming to terms with its oppressive
past and working
towards a future that all
South Africans can call their own.
"No
one truly knows a nation until one
has been inside its jails."
Nelson Mandela
Long Walk to Freedom
