Hire or Rent a car

You may want to hire a car as you arrive at Johannesburg International Airport:

Driving yourself

Having your own wheels will maximise your independence; it is also more reliable for getting to places on time. Like any city, allow more time to get through traffic at peak times.

If you are going to be around for a while, buy yourself Map Studio miniplan of Joburg from a stationer, bookstore or supermarket:

South Africa is a right-hand drive country; if you intend hiring a car and driving yourself, make sure you stick to the left side of the road.

Whether you’re a foreigner or a local, always have a valid driver’s licence and your passport or ID on hand.

If you plan a night out on the town drinking, consider calling a service like
Corporate Cabs , 0800 800 800 | www.corporatecabs.co.za or

Toot-n-Scoot (they get you home safely, park your car and travel back on a scooter that fits in your boot or trunk) +27 (0) 82 239 4668 | www.toot-n-scoot.co.za

International drivers

Foreign licences are valid up to 6 months in South Africa, as long as they're in English.

If not, pre-arrange your international drivers licence before leaving home with your automobile association. Also ask if they have reciprocity with the AA in South Africa; an invaluable service for roadside assistance.

Traffic lights and speed limits

In South Africa traffic lights are called 'robots' and the general traffic limits are:

  • 60kph in built-up areas
  • 100kph on rural roads
  • 120kph on highways

Most fuelling stations are open 24-hours and it is courtesy to pay a tip (oil and water checks are standard and you are served).

Maps and Directions

Get yourself a good map of the city. (Map Studio miniplans are detailed).

It is preferable to get up-to-date maps in South Africa rather than overseas because things turn around too fast in Johannesburg for foreign publishers to keep up.

If you buy your map at home, you will find many place names changed since the ’94 elections: recently, the Witwatersrand Botanical Gardens became ‘The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens…just too recently to be on your map.
